Nonstandard Proofs of Eggleston like Theorems

چکیده

We prove theorems of the following form: if A ⊆ R is a “big set”, then there exists a “big set” P ⊆ R and a perfect set Q ⊆ R such that P × Q ⊆ A. We discuss cases where “big set” means: set of positive Lebesgue measure, set of full Lebesgue measure, Baire measurable set of second Baire category and comeagre set. In the first case (set of positive measure) we obtain the theorem due to Eggleston. In fact we give a simplified version of the proof given by J. Cichoń in [1]. To prove these theorems we use Shoenfield’s theorem about absoluteness for Σ12-sentences.

A Neometric Survey

Nonstandard analysis is often used to prove that certain objects exist, i.e., that certain sets are not empty. In the literature one can find many existence theorems whose only known proofs use nonstandard analysis; see, for example, [AFHL]. This article will survey a new method for existence proofs, based on the concept of a neometric space. We shall state definitions and results (usually with...

Nonstandard Proofs of Herglotz, Bochner and Bochner-Minlos Theorems

We describe a unified approach to Herglotz, Bochner and BochnerMinlos theorems using a combination of Daniell integral and nonstandard analysis. The proofs suggest a natural extension of the last two theorems to the case when the characteristic function is not continuous. This extension is proven and is demonstrated to be the best one possible. The goal of this paper is to show how the classic ...

From Nonstandard Analysis to Various Flavours of Computability Theory

As suggested by the title, it has recently become clear that theorems of Nonstandard Analysis (NSA) give rise to theorems in computability theory (no longer involving NSA). Now, the aforementioned discipline divides into classical and higher-order computability theory, where the former (resp. the latter) sub-discipline deals with objects of type zero and one (resp. of all types). The aforementi...

Generating Counterexamples for Structural Inductions by Exploiting Nonstandard Models

Induction proofs often fail because the stated theorem is noninductive, in which case the user must strengthen the theorem or prove auxiliary properties before performing the induction step. (Counter)model finders are useful for detecting non-theorems, but they will not find any counterexamples for noninductive theorems. We explain how to apply a well-known concept from first-order logic, nonst...

A Nonstandard Proof of the Jordan Curve Theorem

In this paper a proof of the Jordan curve theorem will be presented. Some familiarity with the basic notions of nonstandard analysis is assumed. The rest of the paper is selfcontained except for some standard theorems about polygons. The theorem will be proved in what ought to be a natural way: by approximation by polygons. This method is not usually found in the standard proofs since the appro...
